Electric Shower Not Working? Simple Checks to Try Before Calling an Electrician
An electric shower that will not turn on, only runs cold or keeps tripping the consumer unit can be frustrating, particularly when you need it in a hurry. Some basic checks may identify a simple supply or water-flow issue, but electrical shower faults can become dangerous if the unit or wiring is disturbed.
Do not remove the shower cover or attempt internal repairs. Before carrying out any safe external checks, switch the shower off at the pull-cord switch or wall-mounted isolator. If you notice a burning smell, sparking, scorching, unusual heat or buzzing, stop immediately and contact a qualified electrician.
Start with electrical safety
Electric showers use a large amount of power and are normally supplied by a dedicated circuit. In older Scottish tenements and other period properties, the installation may include older consumer units, cabling or switches that need careful assessment. Do not assume that a tripped switch is simply a nuisance, especially if it happens repeatedly.
You can check the external controls, but do not reset a protective device more than once if the fault returns. A repeated trip from an RCD or MCB indicates that the circuit or appliance may have an electrical problem that requires testing.

With the shower switched off, check whether the pull-cord or isolator appears damaged, loose or unusually hot. If the switch has a small indicator light, see whether it comes on when the shower is selected, although a failed indicator does not always mean the shower has lost its supply.
At the consumer unit, look for a tripped MCB or RCD. If one has moved to the off or middle position, switch the shower off locally first, reset the device once, then try the shower briefly. If it trips again, leave the circuit switched off and arrange professional help.
Some properties have an additional local switch or connection point near the bathroom. Do not dismantle it, but check externally for visible damage or signs of overheating. In older homes, loose connections, ageing accessories or unsuitable alterations may affect a high-load appliance such as an electric shower.

A dead shower with no obvious switch or consumer unit issue may have a failed isolator, loose connection, damaged cable or internal component fault. These problems need electrical testing, particularly where the property has older wiring or a consumer unit without modern protective devices.

An electric shower may appear faulty when the water supply is restricted. Low flow can cause the shower to overheat, reduce its temperature or switch off through its safety protection.
You can safely clean the showerhead by removing it from the hose, rinsing away limescale and checking that its spray holes are not blocked. Examine the hose for kinks or crushing, and replace it if the inner lining has collapsed or is obstructing the flow. Do not remove filters from inside the shower unit or poke tools into the inlet.
If flow remains poor, the issue could involve the incoming supply, a blocked inlet filter or a fault within the shower. An electrician or suitably qualified shower engineer can isolate the appliance and investigate safely. Avoid using the shower if it repeatedly overheats or cuts out.
Cold water only
First, check that the temperature control has not been turned fully down and allow the shower a short time to reach its normal setting. If water continues to run cold while the flow is normal, the heating element may have failed or a thermal cut-out may have operated.
A failed element often causes cold water without affecting the water pressure. Some showers also make a clicking sound or stop heating after running for a short period. Do not try to reset an internal thermal device or replace the element yourself, as the cover must not be opened and the circuit needs to be isolated and tested correctly.
Intermittent operation and repeated cut-outs
A shower that works for a few minutes before turning cold or switching off may be overheating because of restricted flow, limescale or an internal fault. Poor ventilation around the unit, a failing pull-cord switch or a loose electrical connection can also cause unreliable operation.
Record when the fault happens and whether the RCD or MCB trips. This information can help an electrician identify the problem, but do not keep restarting the shower to test it. If the switch feels hot, the unit smells of burning or the fault is becoming more frequent, isolate it and leave it unused.
