What a boiler condensate pipe does

Modern condensing boilers produce acidic water as a by-product of their high efficiency. This wastewater, called condensate, is carried away from the boiler through a small plastic pipe to a drain.

This pipe is usually made from white or grey plastic and is smaller than the heating flow and return pipes. Part of it often runs outside, which is the section most likely to freeze in cold weather.

1. Switch the boiler off

Turn the boiler off at its control panel first. In many cases you can leave the electricity supply on at the fused spur, but if you prefer, you can switch that off too for extra peace of mind.

Turning the boiler off prevents it from repeatedly trying to start while the pipe is still frozen, which can reduce strain on the internal components.

2. Warm the pipe gradually

Fill a jug or bowl with warm tap water. It should be hot to the touch but not boiling. Boiling water can crack the plastic pipe and cause leaks.

Slowly pour the warm water over the frozen section of the pipe, starting nearest the house and working your way outwards. Repeat this a few times, allowing the heat to soak in between pours.
