Gas Cooker and Hob Installation

Your new gas cooker or hob, fitted safely and ready to cook on

You've chosen a new gas cooker or hob, or you're swapping an electric one for gas, and now it needs connecting. The law says gas work must be done by someone competent, and anyone paid to do it must be on the Gas Safe Register. A badly connected appliance can leak gas or give off carbon monoxide, and a freestanding cooker without its stability bracket can tip forward when the oven door is pulled open.

We install gas cookers and gas hobs, whether it's a like-for-like swap or a new appliance going into a new kitchen. Robert Hill & Co are Gas Safe registered engineers based in Milngavie, serving Bearsden, Kirkintilloch and the surrounding area. Our focus is fitting new gas cookers and hobs rather than repairing them. If your current appliance has a fault, the manufacturer or a specialist appliance repairer is best placed to help.

  • Freestanding gas cookers connected and secured with a stability bracket
  • Built-in gas hobs connected to the gas supply
  • Your old gas cooker or hob disconnected safely
  • Switching from an electric hob or cooker to gas
  • A tightness test and safety checks on every installation

A freestanding cooker connects to the gas supply with a flexible hose and a bayonet fitting on the wall. The hose has to be the right type and length, and it shouldn't be stretched, kinked or resting against the hot back of the oven. A stability bracket or chain stops the cooker tipping forward if someone leans on the open door, which matters most in homes with young children.

A hob is usually connected with fixed pipework under the worktop. The engineer checks it's level, sealed into its cut-out and at the right height below any cooker hood, following the manufacturer's instructions. Most hobs also need a socket or fused spur for their spark ignition. If yours needs one, our NICEIC Approved electricians can fit it, and our joiners can alter a worktop cut-out if the new hob is a different size, so you're not waiting on another firm.

Once connected, every appliance is tested. We carry out a tightness test on the gas pipework, check the gas pressure at the appliance, light every burner to check the flames burn cleanly and make sure the flame safety devices shut the gas off when they should. We also check the kitchen has enough ventilation for the appliance. If you let out the property, the new appliance needs to be on your yearly gas safety certificate, and we can carry out that check too.

Why homeowners choose us to fit their gas cooker or hob

Every gas cooker and hob we fit is connected by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Our registration number is 528939, and you can check it on the Gas Safe Register.

If your new hob needs a socket for its ignition or the worktop needs altering, our NICEIC Approved electricians and our own joiners take care of it as part of the same job.

We belong to SNIPEF, the plumbing and heating trade body for Scotland and Northern Ireland, and the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering.

We're a family-run firm with over 100 years' experience, passed down through three generations of the Hill family.

How your gas cooker or hob installation works

How your gas cooker or hob installation works

1. Tell us what you're fitting

Let us know the make and model, whether it's a cooker or a hob, and whether it's replacing a gas or an electric appliance. If anything about the job isn't clear, we'll arrange to come and take a look first.

2. A clear written quote

You get a written quote for the work before anything starts, including any electrical or joinery work the new appliance needs.

3. Your old appliance disconnected

Our engineer turns off the gas, disconnects your old cooker or hob and checks the supply pipe and connection point are sound.

4. Fitted and tested

The new appliance is connected and secured, then tested: a tightness test on the pipework, a gas pressure check, and every burner and flame safety device checked.

5. Ready to cook

We show you how the controls and ignition work, and leave you the paperwork for the gas work carried out.

Your gas cooker and hob installation questions answered

Find answers to common questions about our services and process.

It depends mainly on whether it's a straight swap or a new position. Replacing a gas cooker or hob where the gas supply is already in place is the simplest job. Moving the appliance, running a new gas pipe or adding a socket for a hob's ignition adds to the work. Tell us what you're fitting and where, and we'll give you a written quote before anything starts.

A like-for-like swap is the quickest job, because the gas connection is already there. A new gas pipe, a worktop alteration or electrical work all take longer. We'll tell you how long your job should take when we quote.

No. We install new gas cookers and hobs, but we don't carry out repairs on them. For a fault, contact the manufacturer, especially if the appliance is still under warranty, or a specialist appliance repairer. If you smell gas, turn the appliance off, open the windows and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.

We'd strongly advise against it. Anyone paid to do gas work must be on the Gas Safe Register, and Gas Safe advise always using a registered engineer. A connection that looks fine can still leak, and a missing stability bracket or poor ventilation won't show until something goes wrong. Many manufacturers also need a Gas Safe registered engineer to fit the appliance for its warranty to apply.

Often, yes, as long as the house has a gas supply. It means running a gas pipe to where the new hob or cooker will go, so the cost depends on how far that is from your existing supply and the route the pipe can take. We'll look at the route and explain what's involved before we quote.

Have the new appliance delivered and, if you can, unboxed, with its installation instructions kept to hand. For a hob, the worktop cut-out should be ready unless we've agreed to do it. Clear the space around the cooker so our engineer can get to the gas connection.
