If one radiator is staying cold while the heating is on, it is usually a fault you can at least narrow down with some simple, safe checks. Before you start, always let hot pipework cool, and never open sealed parts of your heating system such as the boiler casing or filling loop fittings.

On most modern systems, each radiator will have two valves. One is a TRV (thermostatic radiator valve) which you usually set with numbers from 0 to 5. The other is the lockshield, normally capped with a plain plastic cover and used by engineers to balance the system.

Most homes have a two pipe system, where one pipe brings hot water into the radiator and the other takes cooler water away. If both pipes stay cold while other radiators work, there is no flow to that radiator.

With a combi boiler, the boiler heats water directly from the mains for taps and radiators. A system boiler feeds a separate hot water cylinder and heating circuit. In both cases, the radiator issues and checks are very similar for homeowners.

Turn your heating on and set the room thermostat higher than normal so the system definitely calls for heat. Set the TRV on the cold radiator to its highest number and confirm the other valve (lockshield) is at least part open by turning it gently anti clockwise a quarter turn.

Carefully remove the TRV head if it is the removable type. Underneath you will see a small metal pin. It should spring up slightly and move a few millimetres when pressed. If it does not move at all, or feels stuck, the valve may be seized internally.

Feeling pipes and listening for flow

With the heating on, feel the two pipes to the radiator where they meet the valves. One should gradually get hot first, followed by the other as water flows through the radiator. Listen with the room quiet for any hissing or trickling that might suggest air moving inside.

If both pipes stay stone cold while other radiators nearby are hot, there is no flow to that radiator. That points to a closed lockshield, stuck TRV, blocked radiator, or in rarer cases, an airlock in the pipework.

Comparing with other radiators for balancing clues

Balancing problems show up as radiators that only heat properly when others are turned off, or that are always much cooler than similar radiators on the same floor. Try turning a couple of nearby radiators down on their TRVs and see if the cold one improves.

If your radiator suddenly heats up well when others are cooler, it suggests the system could benefit from proper balancing. That involves small lockshield adjustments across the whole system and is usually better handled using detailed balancing guidance or by an engineer.

Spotting sludge and blockages

Sludge is a build up of rust and debris that can settle in radiators and restrict flow. Signs include the radiator being hot at the top but cold or patchy across the bottom, or the pipes getting hot but the middle of the radiator staying stubbornly cool.

If you gently tap the bottom of the radiator with your knuckles and it sounds dull and heavy compared to others, sludge may be present. Full chemical flushing and cleaning is a job for professionals with the right equipment and should not be attempted by draining the system yourself.

Recognising an airlock or system‑wide issue

If multiple radiators on the same branch of pipework are cold, or you often hear gurgling and have to bleed radiators repeatedly, there could be an airlock or circulation problem. Comparing several radiators across the house will help you see a pattern.

In combi and system boiler setups, poor pump performance or a sticking motorised valve can reduce flow to parts of the property. These components are inside the boiler or in the airing cupboard and should be checked only by a qualified engineer.

What not to do when a radiator will not heat

It is tempting to be heavy handed with stuck parts, but that can quickly lead to leaks and more serious faults. Keep your checks gentle and avoid any work that opens the system to air or water.

Do not force any valve with pliers or grips. If a TRV pin or lockshield will not move with light finger pressure or a small turn of a suitable screwdriver or spanner, stop and call an engineer. Over tightening or forcing can crack the valve body or disturb ageing pipe joints.

Avoid draining the system or adding DIY chemical flushes. Incorrect use can stir up debris, block narrow passages or leave the boiler without adequate corrosion protection. Similarly, do not remove radiators completely for manual flushing unless you are competent and prepared to manage refilling and bleeding properly.

Some symptoms suggest a deeper fault that needs professional attention rather than further home checks. Calling an expert early can prevent damage and save energy.

  • Radiators need bleeding again and again, or you see brown water or sludge every time.

  • Boiler pressure keeps dropping or you can see signs of leaks around valves and pipework.

  • Several radiators are cold or only lukewarm, especially on one floor or area of the property.

  • You suspect a faulty pump, motorised valve or control fault because heating is unreliable.

Can a stuck TRV stop all radiators?

A stuck TRV normally only affects the radiator it is attached to. However, in some layouts if a key radiator in a hallway or on the main loop is closed or seized, it can affect circulation slightly elsewhere. If many radiators are affected, the issue is more likely to be the pump, controls, or a system blockage rather than one TRV.

Is it safe to free a valve pin?

Gently pressing a TRV pin up and down with your thumb, or very light pressure from pliers, is usually safe as long as you do not twist or pull the pin sideways. If the pin will not budge easily, or water starts to seep out around it, stop immediately and contact an engineer. Never dismantle the valve body or undo nuts on live pipework yourself.
